40 Worst Songs of 2008

A strange thing happened while compiling this year’s worst songs list: I actually had a hard time coming up with forty songs. Usually I can easily come up with a list off the top of my head. I am not sure if it was because there actually didn’t release as many bad songs as usual this year or if I was able to avoid them better this year. But in the end I was actually able to come up with the usual forty to signify the death of Top 40 radio. Here are the songs that made my ears bleed the last three hundred and sixty-five days. Wait, sixty-six, it was leap year. And don’t forget the extra second they are tacking onto the end of this year.

  1. What about "Take A bow" by Rihanna? That one sent me to sleep! Very boring song!

  2. What about "Take a bow" by Julie Keast? That one sent me to sleep! Very boring song!

    ReplyDelete
  3. Julie, I will concede that Take a Bow is sleep inducing, but I will take a song that puts me to sleep over the above that make my ears bleed anyday. I also want to congradulate you as I always get bashed for my "Worst" list but I think you are the first ever commentor that got bashed by some anonymous. I wish I had a prize to give you.

  4. 'Fly on the Wall' is the worst...god, what a horrible song!

  5. Ok to all of the people who don't like hip hop and pop music I gurantee you will understand why it is so populaur if you go to a nightclub and lollipop or love in this club comes on and your in a nightclub something about the beat of those songs makes you feel so energized and loose, I bet you if you try that then you will see why people like those songs. No other genre of music can do that and even though the lyrics are degrading to women I being a female myself must say that the abrasive lyrics are what makes people like these songs very much. But as rapper t.I would say you guys can listen to whatever you like.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I liken your club theory to the hippies who tell you that the Greatful Dead is great music, you just have to be stoned to understand it. Yeah, when I am drunk at a club surrounded by half naked chicks, these songs are tolerable. And it is really the booze that makes you feel energized and loose. But when I am sober these songs, much like the Greatful Dead, suck massively. Plus I do not hate all pop and rap music (if you scroll through the archives you would see this), just the songs above.

    ReplyDelete
  7. This is the person that mentioned the club theory or w/e I have never taken drugs or got drunk and I don't what the whole hippie thing your talking about but I was refering to the beat not the booze I just want to make that clear. People like songs that are carefree like got money and can't believe it you don't always have to listen to insperational singers and such. My club theory is true though

    ReplyDelete
  8. If a beat is good, a beat is good, you shouldn't have to first go club to like something where you are predispositioned to like things you may other wise not because you go to a club to have fun. Great songs are great anywhere. And since I don't patron clubs often anymore, I just can't get into any of those "club" songs above.

As for the hippie thing, they try to tell you that the Greatful Dead sounds better if you are high, but much like "club" songs, if there were really good, they would be good without any mood altering.

  9. Being a fan of Daughtry, I was a bit disappointed to see him on the lust a few times. But, to each their own.
Anything by Rhianna should have been on the list. She's overplayed and her voice is too whiny.
Also, Lollipop by 36Mafia is pretty intolerable. Low is just as bad.
And, Let it Rock? Don't even get me started on that. It's just bad.

  10. another anonymous
    RE: the club theory
watever when a gang of you all like metal/ rock and the song you all LOVE comes on, it will make you feel carefree.
    its personal choice
    however
rap/hip hop/pop IS mainstream therefor liked by most of country.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Club theory person again even when your in the car and a hip hop song comes on you just can't help but move.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Club theory person again, what do you think is the best hiphop/pop song of the year? (this is to the person that wrote this)

    ReplyDelete
  13. I thought Lollipop was by Lil Wayne, don't tell me there is another lollipop song out there. Also missed Let it Rock. As for Low (assuming you are refering to Flo Rida), it was on last year's list and it would be bad form to put it on again. And did you suggest I "lust" after Daughtry?

I would disagree that "rap/hip hop/pop IS mainstream therefor liked by most of country", that is what is on Top 40 because that is what teenagers like and they make up the bulk of music buying public so record labels pay to get these acts on the radio and MTV. But oldies and talk radio station actually out perform Top 40 throughout the country. And really musi is so fractured these days, nothing is really maintream anymore like The Beatles in the 60's, Motown in the 70's and Michael Jackson in the 80's.

Of course I move when a hip-hop song comes on in the car otherwise the person behind would honk their horn.

Apparently you missed my 100 Best Songs of 2008 list which had plenty of hip-hop songs on it, but as for the best, it would be Paper Planes by M.I.A. that landed at number two.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Why is Whatever You Like by Weird Al on your best list, but not whatever you like by t.i that's so much better

    ReplyDelete
  15. Because Weird Al rules and everytime I see T.I. I always think of Antoine Merriweather. Plus in these economic times I have no desire hear people brag about their materialism whereas Weird Al makes fun of all that in his version.

    ReplyDelete
  16. 1st of all T.I is the hottest person ever, and you should listen to live your life, and no offense but u sound like a nerd who takes everything too seriously and doesn't know how to have fun, you should see t.i in his video for whatever you like omg he i son fire, and there is a song called lolli lolli(pop that body) by 3 6 mafia, and let it rock by kevin rudolf feat. lil wayne they're good songs.

    ReplyDelete
  17. T.I is hot omg!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I kissed a girl, when i grow up,and Lollipop
are great songs why r they on the list???
those are actually on my top 10 list

    ReplyDelete
  19. Since when is watching The Big Bang Theory, listening to Weird Al, and having both Star Wars Trilogy make you a nerd? But anyways.

I personally do not find T.I. hot mostly because I am a straght dude, also I am not shallow enough to like songs just because I find the singer attractive.

I don't know why disliking songs makes me too serious, I'm named after an Adam Sandler reference. I know how to have fun, we apparently find different ways to have it.

Those three songs are on the list because they are sophomoric and I stopped finding songs with thinly vailed double entrenres entertaining around the time I becaume a junior in high school.

    ReplyDelete
  20. That person is right you seem like old, and boring and u think the jonas brothers are good but they have no talent, what is wrong with the song lollipop, and whatever you like is a really good song but not if your like all weird and boring like you probably, and t.i is probably much better looking than you, and the fact that you like paper air planes is weird because your saying you like songs with meaning but all paper air planes is about getting high soo...i don;t see a connection there even though i like that song, and u seen sarcastic

    ReplyDelete
  21. What does this mean sophomoric and I stopped finding songs with thinly vailed double entrenres

    ReplyDelete
  22. Um,I like some of those songs. Like So What and Handlebars..

    ReplyDelete
  23. T.I looks really hot when he tilts his head up.....just putting that out there and you shouldve stopped listening to jonas brothes and Taylor swift in high school 2 watevwr ur name is...

    ReplyDelete
  24. I would expect a milli by lil Wayne to be up there but I guess you do have some taste in hip hop music, why isn't live your life by t.I and rihanna on the best list that song has good meaning

    ReplyDelete
  25. Is there something wrong with being old? The smartest people in the world are old. And I am actually younger than T.I. And apparently you missed the post where I called the Jonas Brothers "Hansen but without the legitamately catchy songs." And when exactly did I ever say I like songs with meaning?

Seriously, work in a dictonary every once in a while:

    Sophomoric: juvanile

Double Entrenres: A word or pharse that on the surface means one thing but really is another.

sophomoric and I stopped finding songs with thinly vailed double entrenres: Only juviniles could find a song about licking a lollipop, which is an obvious oral sex reference, entertaining.

    ReplyDelete
  26. T.I has 6 kids, omg ur younger than t.I his real name is Clifford and it seems like you don't like T.I I think ur jeolous that T.I is rich enough to brag about it and y r the jonas bros on the top 100 songs if u don't like them and maybe lollipop is actually about a lollipop, there's just a strong implication that it is not lol

    ReplyDelete
  27. 1. You're the shallow one because you brought up T.I's looks in the 1st place.
    2. The song Lollipop is not oral sex, its just a fun rap song, the closest a song has ever gotten to oral sex is What's Your Fantasy by Ludacris like 5 years ago.
    3. A song about selling, and getting high on drugs is muchhhh better than a song that says "she lick me like a lollipop??
    4. You need to be more open-minded.
    5. This should be the real best songs of 2008 list http://www.b96hits.com/~promo_b96-top-hits
    5. Make sure you use protection when you listen to lollipop, cover your ears(haha)

    ReplyDelete
  28. So when Lil Wayne says he wants you to lick it like a lollipop, what he wants to to lick like a lollipop, in your theory, is a lollipop. If you are correct that would be the dubmest this ever written. But I'll Give Wayne a little more credit than that.

I compaired him to someone else, how exactly is that shallow? Liking someone's music because of their looks is much shallower than making a comparison to someone else.

If you think it has been five years since anyone has made an oral sex reference in a song, just look at number 17 on this list.

Much better? Debateable. More entertaining? In this case yes. But if Lollipop is actually about licking a lollipop, then Paper Planes may just be about flying paper airplanes in the name of science.

So my Best 100 Songs of 2008 contain rap, rock, pop, R and B, country, bluegrass, folk, easy listening, alternative, latin, soul, irish and world music yet I'm close minded? Really, certainly there are planty names you can call me, closed minded isn't one of them just because I dared to put one of your favorites on my worst.

But #5 on your list may be the most intelegent things written for this post.

    ReplyDelete
  29. dude calm down 1. When someone asked you why you don't like whatever you like u said becuz everytime you look at t.I he reminds u of this guy.
    2. Yes you're right about the song lollipop I'm just saying neither paper planes is free of "bad" refrences
    3. Yes you're right about #17 but if you have heard what's your fantasy by ludacris you will know wat I'm saying.
    4. #5 was meant to be funny, I'm sorry if you didn't think so.
    Peace out.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Lollipop is a really bad song....it's amazing that kind of crap is on the airwaves

    ReplyDelete
  31. Lollipop is not crap, but some people just don't like that type of music. I love it. And a lot of other people do too since lil Wayne has been dominated for 8 grammys

    ReplyDelete
  32. Also I want to apologize for the close minded comment, I just your best of 2006 list.( person that wrote the list post)

    ReplyDelete
  33. I am calm, you won't find a calmer person that doesn't fly paper planes. The Antwaine Merriwether comment was also my attemt at being funny. The real reason why I don't like that song and most of T.I.'s work (and basically every rap song played on the radio) because it sounds like almost every rap song recorded since 1992 that try to cop the styles of Dr. Dre, 2Pac, Biggie or some combination of the three. I have heard Whatever You Like a hundred different times over the past sixteen years.

Same for Lollipop, been there, done that. Wayne isn't the first to use the lollipop mediphore and sadly not the last, and it really hasn't been entertaining since Middle School. But I am just bored with it and the auto-tune that just needs to be retired fast. It is really disturbing that rappers would steal ideas from Peter Frampton. I am not against "bad" references, just cheesy ones. Paper Planes is like nother I have heard before even if she fliped a The Clash sample and somehow could make you bounce to it.

I have heard the Ludacris song but still not entirely sure what you were getting out.

I never sais it wasn't funny, just it was intellegent. Something can be funny and itellengent which is actually what I strive for when not being lazy.

The Grammys are not really a great barometer for musical greatness. Hilary Clinton has more Grammys than Jimi Hendrix, Beach Boys, Bob Marley, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Four Tops, the Who, Neil Young, Buddy Holly, the Jackson 5, Led Zeppelin, the Sumpremes, Cream, Chuck Berry, and Curtis Mayfield, combined.

    Apology accepted.

  34. 1. Rappers now copy those rappers work because it is hard to probably come up with the next big rap song like "california love", and the rappers back then probably didn;t have much to copy from, and they had to make it original, but now rappers have the ability to get ideas from the old school rappers.
    2. I didn't make the comment about T.I, but I have to say that he does look 50 times better than that guy you mentioned, but you are a guy so we will never agree to that.
    3. Whatever You Like may not be a good rap song in the history of rap, but for 2008 it is one of my favorites personally.
    4. You are right about lollipop its been done a lot, 50 cent's Candy Shop is the closest to it. I don't lollipop is a good rap/hip-hop song compared to others but for 2008 it was good.
    5. Heartless and Love Lockdown use auto tune but they were on the best list.
    6. Paper Planes is different, I think the closest to it was Keep Em High by Kanye West.
    7. I think the ludacris song is the closest a song has gone to actually being oral sex, not oral sex refrence, refrences to that are in almost every rap song now.
    8. I thought when you said it was intelligent you were being sarcastic, but thank you, it was just something that came to my mind.
    9. I didn't write the grammy comment but even though I like Lil Wayne I don't think he deserves 8 grammy nominations.
    10. I just think that you need to be more open minded to Britney Spear's songs. They are actually all very biographical to her life.
    11. I was looking at the 2006 best list, and I saw that "That's That" was on the list, and I'm wondering how that is different from other rap songs, and lollipop, and like other rap songs on this worst list isn't?

    ReplyDelete
  35. 12. Lollipop is used as a metaphor because there aren't many other things to compare that to. Unless lil Wayne's next single is called envelope and goes something like " she lick me like an envelope"

    ReplyDelete
  36. Rappers don't not try to invent a new song because it is hard to do (see The Roots who have something new for every release over the past 15 year) but are too scare. Most care more about selling records than making art. Doing both is what musicians of every genre should strive for.

I will defer how dudes look to you, but I will mention T.I. this way: why did he get brought up in the first place: dude didn't even make my worst list this year. Can we just retire any T.I. talk or at least move it to a post where I actually disrepected him to make it relevest to the post.

I don't hate auto tune, just think it has been over done, artists from Framton, Teddy Riley and Bon Jovi have all used it, but none recoded a whole album of it. I can take a song or two, but if you scroll through my archives you would see I crushed Kanye for doing that. While in my archive you could also see Kanye was planted in the top 10 in most years. Those songs didn't even crack the top 50 this year.

I have some Britney songs on my iPod (also in my archives is a guilty pleasures list). But to be autobiographical you have to write the songs yourself. Not to mention I have no desire to hear anything about her personal life any more.

Because it is Snoop and there is no one like Snoop out there. He has a laided back style that no one can replicate. And R. Kelly laided down one catchy hook. I don't like to say never, but it is hardly unlikely Snoop would ever be on a worst list from me.

Any middle school boy could come up with 100 different metaphors in one sitting. And envelope wouldn't even make the list, licking an envelope tastes bad. And please don't give him any ideas.

    ReplyDelete
  37. 1. That's right musicians should try to sell records, and at the same time create a good original song.
    2. I don't know how T.I got brought up, but there should never be a post disrespecting T.I.
    3. Snoop Dogg used auto tune in sensual seduction.
    4. Britney is actually a really great singer, but her personal life overhadowed that this year, but I thought all the songs she released this year were catchy, and good.
    5. Yes Snoop's style is laid back but a lot of songs like That's That have been done it's just about clubbing and sex, and I bet if any other rapper had song Drop It like its hot you would've placed it on the worst list.
    6. The envelope thing was a joke, and I'm sure the people that work for Lil Wayne, and he himself are smarter than a middle school boy, what else is there frosting off a cupckae? Maybe it would

    ReplyDelete
  38. Where I come from it is alright to disrespect a felon who bought enough firearms on the black market to arm a small country.

I would argue that Snoop does it to hilerious effect. Again one and a while is fine. It is when you start using it as a crutch that it starts to bug me or to hide the fact you can't sing.

Apparently you have never heard Britney sing live, not that many people have. Great singers don't hide behind guided vocals or just straight up lip-syncing. Speaking of someone who abuses auto tune, she was one of the first artists to use it full time to correct missing notes in the studio. There is a very thin line between Milli Vanili and Britney Spears.

That's debatable, Drop it Like it's Hot was the best non-Dre beat Snoop has ever rapped over. But nobony can really replicate Snoop. And why argue hypotheticals.

As a former Midle School boy, just take my word that there are plenty, I won't disgust you with the results.

    ReplyDelete
  39. 1. T.I did that because he was protecting himself because people were trying to shoot him.
    2. On a CD, or an iPod Britney sings great.
    3. I love the song Drop It Like It's Hot, and almost all the other Snoop songs, I was just saying that you show favoritism towards him.
    4. Girls don't really think about it that way, they just listen to it... it's more the guys, so you can keep that to your self.....or share them with Lil Wayne's managment.

    ReplyDelete
  40. If someone was trying to shoot T.I. you have to ask yourself why. Someone wasn’t mad that he rang his doorbell one too many times trying to sell Girl Scout cookies. Instead of walking away from a potentially fatal situation he decided to escalate the situation by arming himself. And you do not buy guns for protection; you buy them to kill things. If someone wants protect themselves, they would buy a bulletproof vest, security system, and/or bodyguards. Ask Plexaco Burris how owning a gun for “protection” worked out for him. A wise man once said if you think you need to take a gun somewhere, don’t go there in the first place.

But it is our right to own a gun, except T.I. lost his right after multiple felonies, one that even involved unregistered firearms. And if someone were to legitimately hide behind owning a gun under the guise of protection as written into our Constitution (which I have friends and family do), you certainly cannot excuses owning three machine guns and two silencers for “protection.” Machine guns sole purpose it to kill a crowd of people and silencers are for killing people without anyone being able to hear the gunshot. These guns certainly are not for protection. And T.I. was trying to buy more guns when he got caught.

There is absolutely no defending owning multiple machine guns and silencers for any reason.

    ReplyDelete
  41. 1. This post has become more about T.I than your worst 40 songs.
    2. Someone killed his best friend while trying to kill him and someone killed sister, I'm sure you would want revenge on someone that did that to you, I don't think he was going to kill a small country because there would be no point for him to do that. People were trying to shoot him because he came from like a poor place and then got rich so people were jeolous of him. Most of the felonies have to do with drugs. He explains this in Dead and Gone which also features justin timberlake.

  42. Excuse but where are songs like A millie,Human,Here I am,violet hill, pork & beans, i choose you and Burnin up.And why the hell is Ones step at a time there. That was one of the nicest sweetest songs of the year. The message behind it is very good and something lots of people can relate to. i also cleary coudn't help but notice that about 3/5 of the songs on this list were worldwide hits. I just think you the odd one out. My view on life is that if you want to critise something you have to deliver something better than the ting you critise. So i'll be waiting in suspense for your number 1 billboard hit and 8 grammy nominations...

    ReplyDelete
  43. EVERYTHING by Katy Perry makes my ears bleed! Yuck!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Whoa..the comments in this post are keeping me entertained! You are a great debater, Scoot! :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. So let me get this straight, your "view on life is that if you want to critise something you have to deliver something better than the ting (huh?) you critise" yet you get here by searching for the worst songs of the year then start off by naming seven songs to critise for not being on the list. So where exactly is the song you wrote that is better than Pork and Beans?

As for being the odd man odd, since you brought her up, let's look at Jordin Sparks who has barely gone platinum that makes 305,000,000 Americans that said, "No thanks." In fact 97% of people who watched American Idol thought her singing other people's songs alright but passed on her singing her own material.

Just because something is on the Billboard charts doesn't make it popular. Let you in on how the music industry works, record companies have mastred the art of manulating charts through various means like paying off DJ or having interns whose sole job is to call radio stations across the nation requesting songs. So I will have a Billboard hit as soon as someone puts a million dollar marketing campaign behind one of my songs.

As for the Grammy's, I may not have one, but scroll up in comments to see which artists, like Jimi Henmdrix, have the same as me.

There is really no good barometer to what is "most popular" but the billboard charts certainly isn't it. Maybe the closest is touring because you really cannot fudge those numbers like the Billboard charts. You take a band like the Dave Matthews Band that hasn't had a "hit" in years yet they will automatically go multiplatnium every album and sell out each shoe on their tour in under an hour without promotion. Name me anyone on this worst list that can do that (sans maybe Madonna).

Angie, I am glad I can ammuse you and hope this latest comment is as enjoyable as the previous ones.

  46. How is lollipop worse than a milli? Stop hating on T.I.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Because Lollipop is cheesier and more sophomoric. And this nothing wrong with hating on a multiple felon. He isn't being put in jail time after time for planting too many trees.

    ReplyDelete
  48. It seems like u r jeolous of T.I. People make mistakes they're ok to look over if ur as talented and hot as him

    ReplyDelete
  49. The only things that make sense on this post are that person that wrote with the numbered lists, and the the person that wrote this, scooter or w/e, every other comment has nothing to do with this ecspecially the comments about how T.I looks hot when he tilts his head up, even though he does, leave that for a different post

  50. Barack Obama !!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  51. How come if I were a boy and single ladies aren't up there, they are so annoying and sound like all of beyonces previous songs not to mention they are not autobiographical since beyonce is married. Also if you're all against guns or w/e then why is vato on the best list, and what's wrong with live your life and dead and gone also if I were a boy is the same thing as like a boy by ciara. The best of 2008 list is strange but very well rounded.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I don't understand who ur like are u famous or ru a regular person given ur opnion?

    ReplyDelete
  53. I hate that song "When I Grow Up" eww. But a lot of those songs I really like such as "I Can't Believe It", "Womanizer & Circus", "Lollipop" grew on me and there is no way anyone, man or woman could not know what that song is about unless they were transported from a time machine from the 1950's. I'm a woman and most women know what that song is about. "Handlebars" is one of the most thought provoking song in years it speaks on corporate greed and other such issues. I love "Spotlight". Both songs by Katy Perry are cool, especially "Hot and Cold" (I know with "Kised a Girl" she was trying to become famous through controversy and she stole the idea from that woman back in the 90's but it is kind of catchy.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Dude, wat is ur problem?!?! a good amount of those songs are pretty good, or else why would they have all gotten onto the top 100 songs billboard? personally, all those songs have gotten them all alot of $

    ReplyDelete
  55. ur just jealous

    ReplyDelete
  56. just cuz their on this "100 songs billboard" you speak of doesnt mean their good. it just means their like, marketed better and...people get influenced by propaganda and what not. where the fuck did the soul in music go? all you hear now is some empty, souless, piece of shit that anyone could make. seriously, these shit artists get paid so much for making pathetic music. what the fuck. im talking about mainstream music here by the way. i live in the philippines and i dont know where to find any places that play hendrix or PUTS, so i gotta listen to bullshit like pokerface all the fucking time when im out. catchy, but souless. jealous of what? oooh i wish i made some shit record and got lotsa money! yeah! music has nothing to do with creativity! yeah! pathetic man. oh yeah, scooter your a cool dude.

    ReplyDelete
