40 Worst Songs of 2008

A strange thing happened while compiling this year’s worst songs list: I actually had a hard time coming up with forty songs. Usually I can easily come up with a list off the top of my head. I am not sure if it was because there actually didn’t release as many bad songs as usual this year or if I was able to avoid them better this year. But in the end I was actually able to come up with the usual forty to signify the death of Top 40 radio. Here are the songs that made my ears bleed the last three hundred and sixty-five days. Best New Shows of Fall 2008

In this I have to be first world we live in, there tends to be a rush to judgment. Take the first impression of The Big Bang Theory which was universally panned thanks to a sub-par pilot last year, many of the jokes that were killed by the overplaying of the promo before the show become much beloved by the end of the year. So once again I have rounded up a cabal of TV Bloggers to list their favorite new shows of the season now that they have gotten about a month of episodes under their belts. Then I put their list into my patented formula that is slightly more credible than token daily tracking poll. Here are the results. You can catch up by downloading the shows on iTunes and/or Amazon Video on Demand.

1. Privileged (The CW) iTunes - Amazon
2. Fringe (Fox) iTunes - Amazon
3. True Blood (HBO)
4. The Mentalist (CBS)
5. My Own Worst Enemy (NBC) iTunes - Amazon
6. Raising the Bar (TBS) iTunes
7. Busted (MTV) iTunes - Amazon
8. Gavin & Stacey (BBC America) iTunes
9. Kath & Kim (NBC) iTunes - Amazon
10. Gary Unmarried (CBS)

Also receiving votes: Life on Mars, 90210, Worst Week, Whatever Martha!, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Eleventh Hour, Sons of Anarchy, The Ex-List, Rita Rocks
Voters: Dan, Ducky, Matt, Rae, Sandie, Scooter McGavin, Tube Talk Girl, Vance

The closest thing to a consensus would be Privileged, then Fringe slightly behind and everything pretty much bunched up at the bottom. But considering some of the negative comments voters sent with their ballots, they are less than enthuse with the new slate of shows this fall much like I am which many are contributed to lingering effects of the writer’s strike. Honestly I was thinking of not hosting the poll this year but only did for prosperity sake so in 1000 years from now people in the future could tell just how poor this television season was. In a measure of full disclosure, here was my ballot:

1. Busted (MTV)
2. Gary Unmarried (CBS)
3. Raising the Bar (TNT)
4. Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Cartoon Network)
5. The Ex-List (CBS)

Best Television Shows of 2007-2008

It is weird compiling a list of the best television for the past year with so many shows disappearing in the middle of the year or being rushed to complete the sessions with a couple less episodes that were planned. It was interesting with all my bemoaning of hoe horrible the new batch of shows were last summer, freshmen shows dominated the list with four of the top five shows. Here are my picks anyways for the best of the last twelve months:

1. Friday Night Lights 2.x (NBC)
2. Pushing Daisies 1.x (ABC)
3. The Big Bang Theory 1.x (CBS)
4. Eli Stone 1.x (ABC)
5. Chuck 1.x (NBC)
6. Survivor: Fans vs. Favorites (CBS)
7. Lost 4.x (ABC)
8. Rescue Me 4.x (FX)
9. Greek 1.x (ABC Family)
10. My Name Is Earl 3.x (NBC)

A nice even split among the networks this year (not counting the unwatchable FOX or The CW) with cable getting a share of the pie this year too. Below is a breakdown as well as a running tally of the shows that led in numbers of Quotes and Songs of the Week from my weekly 57 Channels rundown:

NBC (3)
ABC (3)
CBS (2)
FX (1)
ABC Family (1)

Quote of the Week
Friday Night Lights (9)
The Big Bang Theory (5)
Lost (4)
Pushing Daisies (3)
How I Met Your Mother (3)
My Name Is Earl (2)
Journeyman (2)

Thanks to the writer’s strike, this was a weird year for television. Some shows ended around Christmas and won’t be coming back until the fall with some never to be seen again. But on the bright side, this was the first time in a very long time that a show I loved didn’t get canceled. This year’s awards also mark the first time Veronica Mars didn’t win top honors for Best Scripted Show on account that it is no longer on. 25 Best Characters on Television

We are a week away from the first post-strike episodes starting with the CBS comedies. Grant it will be more of a trickle than a pour with the sitcoms coming back first while most of the dramas won’t be showing up until next month. To mark the return of the writers I have decided to make up a list of their best creations, the characters that make us laugh and cry week in and week out. And since it is much more fun if my homies get some, I decided to invite some to make up their own list (keeping it just to current television characters), then I threw all the ballots I received into my algorithm (patent pending) so complex that it would make Stephen Hawking stand and applaud to get on definitive list. Here are the results:

1. Kara “Starbuck” Thrace (Battlestar Galactica)
2. Tami Taylor (Friday Night Lights)
3. Barney Stinson (How I Met Your Mother)
4. Benjamin Linus (Lost)
5. Dexter Morgan (Dexter)
6. Coach Eric Taylor (Friday Night Lights)
7. Landry Clarke (Friday Night Lights)
8. Dwight Schrute (The Office)
9. Lily Rush (Cold Case)
10. Omar Little (The Wire)
11. Gaius Baltar (Battlestar Galactica)
12. Olive Snook (Pushing Daisies)
13. Shawn Spencer (Psych)
14. Sheldon Cooper PhD (The Big Bang Theory)
15. Dr. Juliet Burke (Lost)
16. Michael Weston (Burn Notice)
17. Captain Jack Harkness (Torchwood)
18. Dr. Miranda Bailey (Grey’s Anatomy)
19. Chuck Bartowski (Chuck)
20. Brenda Leigh Johnson (The Closer)
21. Emerson Cod (Pushing Daisies)
22. Ned “The Piemaker” (Pushing Daisies)
23. Liz Lemon (30 Rock)
24. Stephanie Lane (My Boys)
25. Stewie Griffin (Family Guy)

Also receiving multiple votes: Desmond Hume (Lost), Major John Casey (Chuck), Jack Donaghy (30 Rock)
Voters: Ducky, Jo, Kate, Sandie, Scooter McGavin, TVFan, Vance

For those keeping track at home, that Friday Night Lights and Pushing Daisies led the list with three characters each with Lost and Battlestar Galactica getting a pair each. I had asked everyone to send along the full name of their choices and was a little annoyed that the people who voted for Ned didn’t include his last name until I realized that we have yet to learn his full name. Where the Narrator calls everyone by their full name, he always refers to him as the Piemaker. And in a measure of full disclosure, here are the characters that made my top ten (for those that agree or disagree, that is what the comment section is for):

1. Landry Clarke (Friday Night Lights)
2. Sheldon Cooper PhD (The Big Bang Theory)
3. Emerson Cod (Pushing Daisies)
4. Major John Casey (Chuck)
5. Coach Eric Taylor (Friday Night Lights)
6. Earl Hickey (My Name Is Earl)
7. Barney Stinson (How I Met Your Mother)
8. Shawn Garrity (Rescue Me)
9. Maggie Decker (Eli Stone)
10. Frannie Morgan (Greek)
