I Want My Music Television: February 25, 2019

break up with your girlfriend, i'm bored - Ariana Grande

I found Sweetner to be Ariana Grande’s weakest album (despite God Is a Woman being her best song) and I was not expecting much from her follow up Thank U, Next after the title track, 7 Rings, and this dropped the same time as the album. But despite the week singles, I actually found it her strongest album totally. The music video had an obvious twist because that dude was acting like a total douche.

Take On Me - Weezer

Africa was fun, but Weezer’s full-fledged cover album was pretty crindgeworthy (especially No Scrubs). It was at its best with the other cheesy eighties songs like this. Still the song and video are pretty unnecessary.

Armor - Sara Bareilles

I have been complaining for two years that all the anti-Trump songs kind of totally suck. Well it took a while but Sara Bareilles finally wrote a good one. Now if we can only get someone to write a great one.

Preach - John Legend

I guess you can add Preach by John Legend to that good but not great protest song, but For What It’s Worth it is not. Although it may get a bit awkward with Legend as the newest coach on The Voice, a show by Mark Burnett who refuses to turn over the Trump tapes that reportedly has plenty of racist comments by the president.

I Want My Music Television: 5/12/14

There have been a couple of videos that have caught my eye lately so I thought I’d give them some love since the death of Musical Television left a void for a forum on the art form. If you are interested in buying the video through iTunes, click the title link (where available). If you are interested in buying the song, look for a link in the analysis.

Headlights – Eminem featuring Nate Ruess

Eminem has to be the last guy I would think would release a touching music video on Mother’s Day (directed by Spike Lee to boot), but here it is, a Debbie Mathers stand in (presumably) looking for her son, with Marshal even giving her a hug.

I Choose You – Sara Bareilles

On the other end of the emotional spectrum, Sara Bareilles participated in a couple elaborate marriage proposals because how can you say no if Sara Bareillies is standing right there. I would have to think about it if Post-It Note origami was also involved..

The Wall – Willie Nelson

At eighty, Willie Nelson is getting a little nostalgic with his latest music video, listing his numerous accomplishments over his career. One stat that stood out to me was that the video listed only one Grammy Award. I had to look it up, if Wikipeadia is to be believed, he only won two more in the Country Collaborations category. That seems low for someone who has been around as long as he has.

Dare (La La La) – Shakira

It looks like Shakira is also getting a little nostalgia, at least that opening looked a lot like her first English language music video for Whenever Wherever. Or maybe I am just reading too much into it. Unfortunately this new song is annoyingly bad. Maybe she should go back to her old sound.

Say What You Wanna Say and Let the Words Fall Out

The Blessed Unrest - Sara Bareilles

With her first two albums, Sara Bareilles recorded two late songs that were not so thinly veiled at her record company still looking for a single, which both Love Song and King of Anything became to launch the albums. Either the record label did not meddle this time around or she was tired of writing snarky anti-love songs because the first single off her third full length album The Blessed Unrest was the positive and upbeat Brave.

Maybe the record company should have irate Sara because the self empowering anthem Brave is the weakest of the three lead singles (but at least we got to see her dance in the music video which was entertaining in itself). And without the instant smash single to lead the album, the rest of The Blessed Unrest feels like a bit of a letdown as a whole without a song to latch onto.

Despite that lack of something initially bring you in, there is still plenty of good songs on the album, just nothing great. If you like your Bareilles songs to go towards the mellow stripped down route like Gravity, check out the loungey (in a good way) Manhattan. That is followed up with the spacey, equally as beautiful Satellite Call which may very well be her weirstest song o date. The album ends with December, a passionate ode to a past love. But The Blessed Unrest would probably be more memorable if it started up with something snarkier.

Song to Download – Manhattan

The Blessed Unrest gets a Terror Alert Level: Elevated [YELLOW] on my Terror Alert Scale.

The Five Most Anticipated Albums of Summer 2013

It has not been a very good year for music. If you think about this time last year we had Fun. and Gotye blowing up while The Lumineers were still bubbling up. This year: nothing. There is not even anything this year as annoyingly catchy as Call Me Maybe (sorry Macklemore). It is probably not a good sign that were are almost halfway through the year and my personal favorite album so far was a traditional country album (Kacey Musgraves debut). Hopefully that will change soon, possibly as early as tomorrow as there are a few worth wild albums coming our way in the second half of 2013. Unfortunately most of them are currently listed under the dreaded TBD which usually means we will not get them until around Christmas. Here are five or six albums that we should hear before the leaves start turning.

1. The Civil WarsThe Civil Wars (August 6): The duo put out one of the best debut albums this decade but a couple months ago they canceled their tour due to “internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition.” They were not breaking but it was ominous nonetheless. But as Fleetwood Mac showed “internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition” can lead to great music. You could not claim anything on their debut to be cheerful, but first single The One That Got Away (as in I wish you were the one that got away) actually sound darker than their first batch of songs. Who knows if we will ever get a third album (The Mac did manage to release six after Rumours), but the second one is shaping up nicely.

2. From Here to Now to YouJack Johnson (September 17): Jack got some early promotion for the new album when he filled in as the headliner for a last minute cancellation by Mumford and Sons. First single I Got You is another laid back acoustic, sitting on the deck at the end of the day song that Johnson excels at. It is too bad we will have to wait until the end of the summer to hear most of the rest of the album.

3. The Blessed UnrestThe Blessed Unrest - Sara Bareilles (July 16): I am not totally sold on the first single Brave which was co-written with one of the dudes from Fun, but Sara’s first two album s were solid, so hopefully there are better things to come on her third.

4. YeezusKanye West (Tomorrow): This would have been number one on my list, and then I heard Kanye perform two songs on Saturday Night Live and got a horrible 808's and Heartbreaks flashbacks. But instead of the crappy emo and auto-tune drenched songs inspired by the mope rock of last decade, New Slave and Black Skinhead sounded like Kanye was listening to way too much Joy Division and other moody new wave acts of the early eighties. Not a very good first impressions. Hopefully the rest of the album is much better.

5. Haim / Churchill (TBD): Neither new band has had the bust out moment that Gotye or Fun had last year, but both released solid four song EPs over the past year and are both are aiming at a full length debut later this year that hopefully live up to the early hype building around both bands.

And here are the rest of the albums worth at least one stream on Spotify coming your way this summer. Click on the album name to pre-order the album on Amazon or the artist’s name to go to their iTunes page.

I Want My Music Videos: 5/20/13

There have been a couple of videos that have caught my eye lately so I thought I’d give them some love since the death of Musical Television left a void for a forum on the art form. If you are interested in buying the video through iTunes, click the title link (where available). If you are interested in buying the song, look for a link in the analysis.

Brave - Sara Bareilles

Oh Sara Bareilles, I love you and all, but if being brave meas dancing like a fool in public, I would rather be a coward.

Here's to Never Growing Up - Avril Lavigne

I hate to break it to Avril Lavigne, only grown ups sing Radiohead and carry around a boom box.

Blowin' Smoke - Kacey Musgraves

Since Alice from Alice just popped up in the upcoming horrible show with Sean Hayes, I have been thinking about the show lately and I have to say I am a bit disappointed that none of the waitresses in the video said, “Kiss my gritz.” I am also slightly disappointed that McG did not direct this video, because the bridge would have been a great place for Kacey Musgraves to break out into a cheesy dance sequence.

Final Warning - Skylar Grey

And I thought the over sexualized video that Skylar Grey last made was weird, this just took it to another level. This album is going to be one schizophrenic mess, hopefully in a good way.

Best of the Week: 4/13/13

Quote of the Week: Reynold, Eddie and Michael must not know me that well if they think that emphasizing the testosterone unity between us, “We’re men, we’re men and we hate women, and we’re gonna, you know, slap each other with towels in the locker room and chug beers.” That doesn’t work with me. That doesn’t appeal to me at all. I don’t want to be engaging in any sort of masculine tomfoolery with these numbskulls. (John Cochran, Survivor: Caramoan)

Song of the Week: Musical Balloon Ride – Sara Bareilles and the cast of Community

Scene of the Week:

Big News of the Week: Syfy Upfronts: Syfy had its upfront this week and here are some tidbits:

- The most promising item that came out of their press conference was that they ordered a pilot from Bryan Fuller (who created three of the best shows of the past decade and his latest Hannibal may make it four) called High Noon and is described as an imaginative, out-of-this-world series exploring what happens when the countries of Earth establish colonies to mine the Moon's resources and discover a new form of life. Chaos erupts in a genuinely emotional, humorously thrilling and always unexpected fashion as the people of the Moon race to uncover this life form's powerful secrets.
- They also ordered a series from Ronald D. Moore (who did the Battlestar Galactica reboot) called Helix about a team of scientists investigate a possible disease outbreak in an Arctic research facility and find themselves trying to protect the world from annihilation. Adn now someone needs to explain to me how this is not The Thing: The Series.
- A second season of Ghost Mine will air thirteen episodes starting in September.
- Three new reality shows are coming this year: Joe Rogan Questions Everything (premiering July 16 at 9:00) with the comedian searching for answers to life’s most startling theories. Cosworld (premiering August 27 at 10:00) about the imaginative world of cosplay competition. And Fanemonium (premiering in the fall) which celebrates the incredibly unique, often misunderstood, and infinitely fascinating fan girl and fan boy culture.
- Premiering in time for Halloween, will be a horror anthology series written, directed, and produced by Jamie Foxx.
- Under “Long Form Development” (which I think make be just a different way of saying mini-series) are three book adaptations of Ringwold by Larry Niven and Childhood’s End by Arthur C. Clarke.
- Other scripts of note in development include No Place produced by Robert Zmeckis, Dominion based on the movie Legion (hopefully Tyra Collette reprises her role, except it should like it will take place twenty years later), and Infinity from Javier Grillo-Marxuach (who created the underappreciated The Middleman).

Preview Picture of the Week:

Dallas Season Finale Monday at 8:00 on TNT

Free Download of the Week: Get Back in the Band – The Presidents of United States of America (NoiseTrade)

Deal of the Week: Blu-Ray Under $10: Evil Dead, Army of Darkness, The Goonies

New Album Release of the Week: Mosquito - The Yeah Yeah Yeahs

New DVD Release of the Week: Django Unchained

Video of the Week: It just seemed like the second season of Burning Love just ended (probably because I just finished last weekend) but the third season sees the return of some of the favorites from past seasons like Annie and Blaze plus some contestants from some unseen to us seasons and one lucky super-fan. You can watch the first episode below and the first three episodes are already up on BurningLove.com.

Next Week Pick of the Week: Dallas, Monday at 8:00 on TNT: It seems like TNT was a bit premature airing the second season of Dallas during the winter and on an already crowded Monday at that. Apparently they cut their losses airing two episodes last week and this week just to wrap things up quicker. No word yet if they will completely cut their losses and end the series, now without J.R. or move it back to the more schedule friendly summer for the next season.

Best of the Week - 5/12/12

Quote of the Week: That’s what you said about the Green Lantern movie. You were 114 minutes of wrong. (Sheldon, The Big Bang Theory)

Song of the Week: Tomorrow Never Knows (Mad Men)

Scene of the Week:

Big News of the Week: Britney Spears to Judge a Singing Competition: Excuse me until I stop laughing. Seriously, how can you fire Paula Abdul and one of The Pussycat Dolls and replace them with one of the few singers out there that is actually a worse singer. And calling Britney Spears a singer is a bit generous because no one has heard her sing live in probably over a decade so she is basically a lip-syncing dancer. And even that is a bit generous because her last public performance, the 2007 Video Music Awards, she did not even bother to lip-sync most of the time. Sure Spears will not be the first karaoke judge with nominal singing ability (I am looking at you Jennifer Lopez) but at least J-Lo can form full sentences, Spears does not even have the mental capacity to get through an entire interview unless it is scripted before hand, how is she going to handle live television? The X-Factor was a joke last season and managed to be a bigger joke in its second season with this announcement. If you wanted credibility, how about throwing the $15 million dollars at someone that can actually sing and still sell music (last year’s Femme Fatal has yet to even pass the million sold mark) like Adele? I’d tune in for that. The only people Britney Spears can attract these days are fans of train wreck television, but she will likely scare off more people than she attracts. The X-Factor is already third in the karaoke genre and with the premiere of Duets later this month, which like The Voice boasts actual credible singers, could be pushed to fourth even with the biggest prize and highest paid judge. Which may mean its final season unless they pick up viewiers.

Preview Picture of the Week:

Grant’s Last Day on Ghost Hunters

Free Download of the Week: Stay – Sara Bareilles (SaraBMusic.com): Get a song from the upcoming album for the low, low price of free, but there is a small catch that you have to share the offer on either Facebook or Twitter.

Deal of the Week: Save up to 55% on Movies & TV Shows (Justified, Game of Thrones, Midnight in Paris)

New Album Release of the Week: The Bright Side - Meiko

New DVD Release of the Week: The Grey

Video of the Week: After starting off as one of the guiltiest pleasures ever in the history of television, Pretty Little Liars got a bit tedious but starting picking up again when they announced A would be revealed at the end of last season. But everybody learning Mona was A was just the beginning. Mona hinted at a biggest conspiracy (I assuming when she told Spencer she could join “The A-Team” was not just a reference to the awesome show) and do not forget that Maya met her untimely demise in the finale too. The new season starts in less than a month and ABC has released its first promo.

Next Week Pick of the Week: Survivor, Sunday (tomorrow) at 8:00 on CBS: How apropos that Mother’s Day would feature an all female final five on Survivor. Sure it would have been even more apropos is any of them were actual mothers. Kim is in the driver’s seat playing both alliances remaining. Will she go with Alicia and Christina and the easier win, or her original alliance of Chelsea and Sabrina, both that could easily siphoned jury votes from her? Or will the four girls realize she is playing both sides and blind side her? Should make for an interesting finale. But not nearly as interesting as whatever Kat has install for the final three as the last Tribal Council. Speaking of Kat. Once they get to the jury portion of the show, Survivor uploads a video every week of the latest jury member going to the Ponderosa, where Jury members hang out until it is Tribal Council time. Usually they are boring with the latest booted contestant weighing themselves, taking a shower and binge eating. If you are lucky you may get an uncomfortable reunion with someone who turned on their alliances like last season when Cochran had to face the former tribemates he got voted out. Then Kat got voted out last week. I cannot put into words how awesome it is but it is the first time I can remember them breaking out the Survivor Psychologist. Trust me, watch it below, this will be the best six minutes you spend today. And after you are done watching be sure to bug Jeff Probst until he lets Kat back for another season.

I Want My Music Television - 9/26/11

There have been a couple of videos that have caught my eye lately so I thought I’d give them some love since the death of Musical Television left a void for a forum on the art form. If you are interested in buying the video through iTunes, click the title link (where available). If you are interested in buying the song, look for a link in the analysis.

Gonna Get Over You - Sara Bareilles

Sara Bareilles dancing. That’s all.

Polka Face – “Weird Al” Yankovic

Jokes.com
"Weird Al" Yankovic - Polka Face
comedians.comedycentral.com
JokesJoke of the DayFunny Jokes

Sure nine of the songs featured in the song made my Worst Songs of the Year lists (as opposed to three that made a Best list) but “Weird Al” Yankovic has the Midas touch in his ability of turning crap into gold.

Time Spent in Los Angeles – Dawes

Dawes makes Los Angeles sound a little drab in this song but do you know what the city of Angels has that, say Cleveland does not? When you throw a house party there, it is stocked with absurdly attractive chick even if the dudes look like darned dirty hippies while here Mellissa McCarthy would be one of the more attractive party-goers if she attended. And it is even worse in the winter when what constitutes as hot chicks here seem to go into hibernation. I really need to spend some time in Los Angeles.

Bad - The Cab

An interesting video from The Cab only told through cell phone messages, but they really over played the amount of pictures, something that has been done before, they should have kept it to a more realistic amount. Well except for the sexting scene, more pictures there would have been preferable.

I Want My Music Television - 3/7/11

There have been a couple of videos that have caught my eye lately so I thought I’d give them some love since the death of Musical Television left a void for a forum on the art form. If you are interested in buying the video through iTunes, click the title link (where available). If you are interested in buying the song, look for a link in the analysis.

Uncharted - Sara Bareilles

I thought this was going to be another one of those fan made video until I went, “wait, isn't that Pharrell? And Josh Groban singing into a banana? Turns out Sara Bareilles got all her singer-songwriters friends to film videos of them lip-syncing her new song. Apparently no one in Maroon 5 has been on YouTube because their camera is too high quality and do not ham it up enough.

From the Clouds – Jack Johnson

Leave it to naturist Jack Johnson to shoot a beautiful video featuring the ocean. This screams view me in HD. And for anyone who would like to download this song for free (and more important legally) head over to Jack Johnson Music to do just that. The catch though is you have to post the link on your Facebook page or Twitter it to get the download. But for me free is free.

Uberlin – R.E.M.

At least the new R.E.M. video is less seizure inducing than their last one.

Freaks and Geeks – Childish Gambino

Yes that is the dude from Community (Childish Gambino is what a Wu-Tang Clan name generator gave him back in college; for those wondering, mine is Illmaster Assasin). I keep on going back and forth on if I actually like the song. Dude’s got wordplay skill, but the nasally delivery puts me off. But bonus points for including a shotout to time slot rival and fellow LaVar Burton fan, The Big Bang Theory.
