Let's Go Out to the Movies

It is hard to come up with any new post as most of my spare time over the past week has been devoted to watching curling, so I thought today I would quickly highlight some movies coming out over the next couple months I that I am looking forward to.

Hot Tub Time Machine

Not since Snakes on a Plane has a movie has been must see by its title along, but by this trailer it looks like the movie may be as entertaining as the Sam Jackson classic.

Kick-Ass

I do not believe I have been this excited for a Nick Cage movie since, well, this will be the first.

Get Him to the Greek

I was a little skeptical when I heard of a Forgetting Sarah Marshall spin off that didn’t feature Marshall Erikson or Veronica Mars, but this movie look watchable if only for the full Diddy scene. I cannot believe I just wrote that sentence.

She’s Out of my League

Okay, this is probably no going to be any good, but Alice Eve is certainly moderately attractive.

I Want My Music Television vol. XLII

Lucky - Jason Mraz with Colbie Caillat

A couple weeks ago one of the major record labels pulled all their videos off YouTube, but I still go there first when looking for new ones intuitively. When I searched for the new Jason Mraz video I found one with a new notice: “This video contains an audio track that has not been authorized by all copyright holders. The audio has been disabled.” So you basically are watching the music with the mute button on because YouTube won’t pull the video but has to strip the audio to avoid copy write infringement. I love getting caught in the middle of uber rich entities fighting with other uber rich entities over pennies.

ManWomanBoogie - Q-Tip featuring Amanda Diva

Yet another reason why Q-Tip landed in at number two of the Best Albums of 2008 list. I can’t imagine anyone who couldn’t get behind this bass line. If you haven’t checked out The Renaissance yet, do yourself a favor and pick it up.

Sooner or Later - N.E.R.D.

Sounds very much like Maybe which may be my favorite N.E.R.D. song. Get it? I guess that is why I never went into stand up. And what is up with the gratuitous Zune product placement.

February Air - Lights

And the very first headscratchingly absurd video of 2009 goes to Canadian artist Lights. Still I watched it about ten times when I first came across it.

I Want My Music Television vol. XXXVII

There have been a couple of videos that have caught my eye lately so I though I’d give them some love since the death of Musical Television left a void for a forum on the art form If you are interested in buying the video through iTunes, click the title link (where available, if not the link goes to YouTube where you can watch the video in full screen). If you are interested in buying the song, look for a link in the analysis.

Human - The Killers

If I were to make a list of the most disappoint things about the 00's, Sam’s Town by The Killers would have to make the list. Most of that was thanks to Brandon Flowers’ own Bruce Springsteen comparison. After that backlash, you would think Flowers would cool it on that, but he is on the record of calling Human a mix between Johnny Cash and the Pet Shop Boys. Um, yeah, okay. But looking at the video it is nice to see the band has ditched the silly Spaghetti Western look, but I have no idea what is with the feathered shoulder pads. Look for Day & Age out November 22.

Move - Q-Tip

Yeah Snoop Dogg just did the retro video a couple months ago, but what I have heard from The Renaissance, color me excited about the new Q-Tip album dropping on November 4.

Make You Crazy - Brett Dennen

What do you do when you’re a singer-songwriter and everyone ignores your first album? Well if you are Brett Dennen you find yourself a famous fan like Mandy Moore and put her in your video where you do your best Al Bundy impression. Works for me.

Lovebug - The Jonas Brothers

Mock me all you want but the new Jonas Brothers song is catchy in a still not as catchy as anything in the Hanson catalog kind of way.

Cleaning Out My Inbox vol. X

A plethora of cool press releases have been flooding my inbox recently that you may find interesting. This post will include blurbs on Caruso, Share Our Strength, Morning Light, Iconoclasts, Web Therapy, Puppy Love, My Boys, and a “Mysterious” video.

- Caruso looks like a show right up my alley if done right, but I am not sure about the time slot as it premieres tonight at 8:00 with two hours. It may just end up being a DVD’er for me as I only put the chance at a second season at under 20% if this were Playing the Percentages. But the coolest part of the show has to be the Tree Fort, check out the video below for a tour (more videos can be found over at NBC.com:

- Sticking with Caruso, you will want to check out SaveCaruso.com where, despite being shipwrecked, Robinson still can communicate via Facebook and Twitter. Also each day you will have an opportunity to win a Microsoft Zune as well as enter a larger sweepstakes for a Sharp Aquos LCD Flat Screen Television, 120 gig Zune and a Microsoft XBOX 360 Elite.

- Over at E-Bay, there is currently an aution going n where you can bid on featured dishes by from Oprah Winfrey, Lauren Conrad, Alec Baldwin, Jeff Probst and more. The auction is being sponsored by Bertolli and the proceeds will go to Share Our Strength to end childhood hunger. The auction ends Saturday 18 at midnight.

- In theaters today for documentary buffs is Morning Light from Roy E. Disney (yes he’s related) and the guys that brought you the surfer film Riding Giants. Below is a trailer:

- Premiering last night was the latest season of Iconoclasts. Oops. Not that I would have been able to watch it anyways because I do not have the Sundance Channel, but apparently Sir Richard Branson taught Archbishop Desmond Tutu how to swim. Look for these hookup this season all at 10:00, Stella McCartney and Edward Ruscha (Oct. 23), Tony Hawk a nd Jon Favreau (Oct. 30) Bill Maher and Clive Davis (Nov. 6) Venus Williams and Wyclef Jean (Nov. 13) Cameron Diaz and Cameron Sinclair (Nov. 20).

- It looks like the internet may soon be the new must see tv. New startup L Studio has two new shows Web Therapy staring Lisa Kudrow and Puppy Love with Famka Janssen, Ally Sheedy, and Sarah Paulson. Below are the links:

Web Therapy:
Episode 1
Episode 2
Episode 3

Puppy Love:
Episode 1

- In my never-ending attempted to be the last to bring you breaking news, let me pleasantly be the last to tell you My Boys has been renewed for a third season. You’re welcome.

- Nothing better to stroke the ego then seeing “Exclusive” staring back at you in your e-mail box. Granted nothing deflates the ego like after opening up the “Exclusive” mail to find something you have already seen elsewhere like over at RTVW. My deflated ego aside, this video is described as “mysterious” where a “group of randomly selected individuals were invited to participate in a screening, what they were shown was 100% real. As they watched the footage, their reactions were caught on film. After the screening, they were then interviewed. Their reactions and comments are also 100% authentic.” To follow the clues, head over this YouTube page. (Considering the user name is Sewhattheysaw and the Halloween release date, I would like to put what is left in my 401(k) after the market collaspe on the latest Saw movie.)

Scooter McGavin's Infinate Playlist

You would think a movie called Nick and Norah's Infinate Playlist would be right up my alley and you would be right. First you got George Michael Bluth and then Kat Dennings who is moderately attractive in a goth chick kind of way. Below is my own personal infinate playlist present in no perticular order and just random songs that randomly came across my brain.

If you have no idea what I am talking about, here is the trailer of the movie that opens October 3rd:

I Want My Music Television vol. XXXIV

Champion - Kanye West

As seen in this Kanye West video and the most recent episode of The Middleman, puppets fraking rule.

Mr. Rock and Roll - Amy McDonald

In a story I broke yesterday (see And You’re singing a Song Thinking This Is the Life) Amy MacDonald has invaded the United States shores with her debut album. Here is the first single.

Clocks - Coldplay and Alicia Keys

Lucky Japanese, they go to a Coldplay concert and out comes Alicia Keys. Although all she does is play some piano, chords that I can play (no, seriously, I can), and it sounds like she played an octave too high. Great nonetheless.

Sunday Bloody Sunday - Colin Munroe

First it was Kanye West and Flashing Lights and now Colin Munroe has dipped a little further back in history putting his mark on a U2 classic.

How Did We Get into this Mess

Apparently some people actually left their houses this weekend to go see Pineapple Express. Personally I stayed in to watch chicks play badminton. For those that went to see the movie, you may have been treated to a new song from Huey Lewis (at least I am assuming because the song is on the soundtrack yet some movie soundtracks do not have many of the songs actually in the movie). So after twenty years Lewis finally found the new drug he wanted. Below is his performance, along with The News, on Jimmy Kimmel and just because, the video for I Want a New Drug. Wow, dude has not aged. Now if you excuse me, I believe there is some team handball being played.

I Want My Music Television vol. XXXIII

Viva la Vida (Anton Corbijn Version) - Coldplay

Coldplay made two videos for the first half of the title track. The Hype Williams directed version (see here) just looks like an extended version of their iPod ad. Interesting enough people said that Violet Hill was a rip off of Depeshe Mode’s Enjoy the Silence and this version, by the band’s admittance, is an homage to that very video directed by Anton Corbjin.

Just a Dream - Carrie Underwood

Who had Carrie Underwood making the most poignant statement of the Iraq War? Dude, put your hand down. You do this by taking the politics out of it and have Carrie take the view of a young widow of an Iraqi Vet. The morphing from the wedding to the funeral is just chilling.

Carmensita - Devendra Banhart

You know when you are at the mall and you occasionally see an unbelievable hot chick waling with some weird dude and think, “Huh?” That is pretty much my whole thought process watching Natalie Portman prance around with Devendra Banhart.

Love Is Noise - The Verve

Not sure how I feel about a reunited The Verve. I was pretty much content with Bittersweet Symphony going down as one of the greatest one hit wonders ever even if Love Is Blind is a decent enough song.

I Want My Music Television vol. XXXII

There have been a couple of videos that have caught my eye lately so I though I’d give them some love since the death of Musical Television left a void for a forum on the art form. If you are interested in buying the video through iTunes, click the title link (where available, if not the link goes to YouTube where you can watch the video in full screen). If you are interested in buying the song, look for a link in the analysis.

Paper Planes - M.I.A.

You think making promos and trailers would be easy, yet nintie percent of the time they actually make me want to see the things they are trying to promote less. The trailer for Pineapple Express would be in the ten percent. The movie on paper doesn’t look like something I’d watch yet thank mostly in part to the M.I.A. soundtrack to the clip, I may end up checking it out (the cheesy white dude saying, “Thug Life” doesn’t hurt things either). The song has the best use of a shotgun sample since Thug Luv.

Superwoman - Alicia Keys

Easily my least favorite song on the latest album from Alicia Keys. Really, most of the singles from As I Am have been suspect. Why the two best songs, The Thing about Love and Sure looks Good to Me, haven’t been released is beyond me. In fact had the former been released earlier this spring it would have easily been the Prom song of the year. Of course this is one of the many reason why the music industry will be extinct in the next decade or so.

This Is the Life - Amy Macdonald

For those always on the look out for the next big thing, here is my suggestion: Amy MacDonald. Another songstress from the British Isles but more KT Tunstall than all the retro singers that have come overseas in the past two years. Her album This Is the Life has been out for more than a year pretty much everywhere else racking up number ones in four countries. The first single here is Mr. Rock and Roll, but for my money, the best song on the album is the title track. You can expect the album to drop stateside August 19 as well as a review the same day on the 9th Green.

Ayyomaman - Tre Hardson featuring Fat Lip

You can’t go wrong with one half of seminal rap group The Pharcyde, but why relegate one of the most eccentric rappers in Fat Lip to just singing the hook. Even without him spitting anything himself, Tre Hardson, whom you may know better as Slimkid3 makes up with his verses.

I Want My Music Television vol. XXXI

There have been a couple of videos that have caught my eye lately so I though I’d give them some love since the death of Musical Television left a void for a forum on the art form so here they are courtesy of YouTube. I advise you to watch them before you read my reviews if you don’t want me to spoil things. If you are interested in buying the video through iTunes, click the title link (where available, if not the link goes to YouTube where you can watch the video in full screen). If you are interested in buying the song, look for a link in the analysis.

Why Do You Let Me Stay Here? - She & Him

Well that was disturbing. Granted Zooey (half of She & Him, M Ward being the other half) was always the darker Deschanel sister. Creepy videos aside, at least the song is catchy. And if you like the song, I have been given permission to let you, my loyal readers, download the song for free for a limited time. And by I, I mean Border.com, so head over there for the free mp3.

My Sweet Love - John Mellencamp

John Mellencamp made two videos for this song, this being my favorite if only for the replay value and the George Bush cameo. Wait, why is George given the “believe” frame exactly.

Come on Over - Jessica Simpson

So let me get this straight, a bunch of Wisconsin country fans booed Jessica Simpson, born and raised in Texas, for not being country enough. Um, alright. Of course it may have been residual booing from the unwatchable Dukes of Hazard remake (a brunette Daisy Duke is blasphemy). And this song isn’t bad for a country song which, granted, doesn’t mean much.

Hope - Jack Johnson

Like most Jack Johnson videos not involving Ben Stiller, Hope is not that interesting. But it is a great song.

I Want My Music Television vol. XXX

House of Cards - Radiohead

Consider my mind blown… sort of. New broke a couple weeks ago that Radiohead was filming a new video without any cameras or light, but with lasers and I guess the buildup in my mind hoped for something cleaner. But this is still a contender for best video of the year.

Man-Sized Wreath - R.E.M.

Another visual wonder this time from R.E.M. Not entirely sure what is going on here even after a couple viewing as it seems to be high tech and low tech to cool results.

Gamma Ray - Beck

Is there anyone who isn’t working with Danger Mouse these days? The latest is Beck and the result is his latest album Modern Guilt. Gamma Ray of which sound like an acoustic version of a Gnarls Barkley track that never existed.

Spaz - N.E.R.D.

Here is the song that N.E.R.D. contributed to that, um; actually I can’t remember what they were selling in that commercial actually. Not a very good marketing job there. But anyways. There are not enough cool performance videos these days. Maybe we will start seeing more since the big budget video is basically dead. Bonus: No Lindsay Lohan in this video.

I Want My Music Television vol. XXIX

Cath... - Death Cab for Cutie

The more I listen to Narrow Stairs (see: And They Carried on Like Long Division) the more Cath… becomes my favorite song on the lattest Death Cab for Cutie album. The video is about as odd as the four and a half minute bass groove that started off I Will Possess Your Heart. Half, a fairly literal version of the song about a lady marrying someone she could have done better than with the other half with the whole band lip syncing in a backstage area with grass. Arighty then.
Hero - Nas & Keri Hilson
The latest album from Nas is no longer called the word I am not allowed to say without receiving a beatdown, indeed is now named, well, nothing. The song has to be in the running for beat of the year so far with it Neptunes meets Timbaland feel, granted the video itself just looks like another Hype Williams retread.
Oxford Comma - Vampire Weekend
In what could be the most profound question of the year, Vampire Weekend ponders, “Who gives a (expletive deleted) about an Oxford Comma”. Indeed. But my pretentiousness aside, you got to like any video that is all one shot. Just don’t ask me what the whole chapter thing is about.
Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) - Amanda Seyfried
Yes that is Lily Kane singing… singing Abba from the theatrical version of Momma Mia, a movie there is no way anyone can get me to see unless Lily Kane herself invites me and involves some extracurricular activities afterwards.

Toss Up: Katy Perry vs Charlotte Sometimes

Every couple days I troll the internet for new music video and usually I still to acts I already know unless there is a big buzz around a new artist or if a title just catches my eye. Videos by Katy Perry and Charlotte Sometimes basically caught my eye for the exact same reason, I thought that I Kissed a Girl and How I Could Kill a Man were covers of Jill Sobule and Cypress Hill respectively and was severely disappointed when it turned out neither were. So let’s break them down individually to their predecessors:

I Kissed a Girl - Katy Perry

I Kissed a Girl - Jill Sobule

What a different a decade makes. The Jill Sobule version would have been shocking had it not have been so cheesy. Not we have Katy Perry presumably trying to be shocking with her Girls Gone Wild video with all the good parts taken out. But you can find more shocking things on ABC Family in primetime these days. They you replace upbeat pop with dirty techno. Even worse: no Fabio cameo.

How I Could Just Kill a Man - Charlotte Sometimes

How I Could Just Kill a Man - Cypress Hill

With MTV’s anti-violence stance it was shocking when Yo! MTV Raps started spinning the Cypress Hill song back in the early nineties. But ever since the Dixie Chicks said goodbye to Earl, it seems like every pop tart from Kelly Clarkson to that arsonist Taylor Swift want to do bodily harm to a jilted ex, so again, not so shocking over a decade later.

Okay, I guess it shouldn’t be too surprising that neither could stack up to the original. But as for the premise for the Toss Up between the two new songs, the clear winner is Charlotte Sometimes as her song is at least remotely catchy.

She Learned to Shake Her Thing In Between My Toes

Yeah, I did my semi-regular I Want My Music Television yesterday, then I cam across this, quite possibly the greatest thing ever in the history of YouTube:

Toe Jam - B.P.A.

I cannot stop watching this video and surprisingly has nothing to do with naked chicks. Seriously Boob Pong could be the greatest thing ever. B.P.A. is just another alias for Norman Cook (if I am not mistaken, that is him, um, twirling) whom you may know better as Fatboy Slim with some help from David Byrne and Dizzee Rascal. Enough technical stuff, they make an eye ball complete with eyebrow their boobs. If I do not post tomorrow it will most likely because I am still watching this. I should not be this entertained with black bars.

I Want My Music Television vol. XXVIII

My Medicine - Snoop Dogg

Snoop Dogg singing country music. Words cannot do this video justice.

Dance with Me - Old 97’s

Okay, some real country music courtesy of the Old 97’s and the hot chick from Battlestar Galactica. I actually had a chance to meet her but unfortunately had a charity event that weekend. All for the best as I probably would have said something stupid, or worst nothing at all while I starred wide-eyed at her.

Hollow Man - R.E.M.

Just a cool video and another great song off of Accelerate from R.E.M.

Sneakerlights - Vanessa Hudgens

I have a soft spot for Vanessa Hudgens because my review of her album quadrupled the record amount of hits for one day at that time. Now there is no way to gauge it, but I also think that day I had the highest percentage of people disappointed to find the 9th Green. But anyways. It is odd that her singing voice in this song sound very little like her talking voice and her singing voice tends to change from song to song. Just thought I’d point that out.

I Want My Music Television vol. XXVII

Pork and Beans - Weezer

What is sad is that I was going to blast the latest Weezer video since Barenaked Ladies already did the internet phenomenon video until I realized that there has been so many new cross over sensations in the year since that video there really not much over lap. And I didn’t realize how attractive Miss South Carolina was when she wasn’t talking. But the Leave Britany Alone guy needs go back to obscurity and stay there.

All Summer Long - Kid Rock

For a second there I though Kid Rock was playing himself as the younger version. It is creepy thinking there is a dead ringer for Rock out there.

Warwick Avenue - Duffy

Mercy is a nice upbeat throwback. The latest from Duffy is simple and effective, the song and the video. I am very close to putting her above Amy Winehouse in the latest import category.

Chasing Pavement - Adele

Speaking of which the latest is Adele who, see if this sounds familiar, is a big hit in her native England, has a retro yet modern feel and is Mark Ronson approved. Nonetheless, a cool looking video, but are there any British people out there can explain what Chasing Pavement means to a Yank?

I Want My Music Television vol. XXVI

Violet Hill - Coldplay

I remember reading that the latest Coldplay song was political and thinking that it was just a sign that there was trouble in Gwyneth land with lines like, “If you love me won’t you let me know,” but a closer listen I guess there are some military themes. And the lampooning of politicians only drives that home. George Bush recently said he gave up golf because it didn’t seem right to do it in wartime, yet he continues to dance as seen here. Well at least he still isn’t as bad as Boris Yeltsin.
Going On - Gnarls Barkley
Usually the latest Gnarls Barkley video is an event for me but I am extremely bitter that the dudes in the video totally stole my go to dance moves when I am inebriated. Hrumph. Ironically while dancing like this I see weird things in door too.
Last Name - Carrie Underwood
Please, if you will, hop into the 9th Green Timwe Machine (patent pending) and go all the way back to 10/23/07 where I wrote, “then Last Name might very well be a prequel to Before He Cheats.” It looks like someone took note and turned a whole video into that concept. I still haven’t decided if this song is the worst thing ever or worthy of the guilty pleasure title, but all off Carrie Underwood’s hair flipping in the video has me leaning towards the latter.
If I Never See Your Face Again - Maroon 5 & Rihanna
This is one of those pairing so inane I am convinced that the manatee writers over at Family Guy has to be involved somehow. Maroon5 and Rihanna? Where is Eric Cartman when you need him? You can also buy these songs DRM free, and sometimes a dime cheaper, over at Amazon MP3, check out the widget below:

I Want My Music Television vol. XXV

Teenage Love Affair - Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys in eighties garb and a nightgown? Yes please. But I’m not sure what is more out of place, the inexplicable “2 Weeks Ago” or the for no reason inclusion of the epidemic in Africa. For a not out of place public service announcement check out:

All I Need - Radiohead

Radiohead tends not to get much talk on the 9th Green on account that I am not pretentious enough to care even if they are letting people download their album for free. But this video does highlight a very serious subject with human trafficking and should get you to thinking the next time you head down to Walmart to buy, well, anything. There are reasons to how Walmart and stores of its ilk can keep there prices so low and it mostly has to do with 70% of their products come from China where employees tend not to get health insurance or anything that resembles minimum wage in the USA. For more information check out End Exploitation and Trafficking.

Beat It - Fall Out Boy and John Mayer

I was on the fence for this Michael Jackson remake, but after seeing this Fall Out Boy video, I think I may fall into the dislike side. John Mayer was wise to sit this one out. Unfortunately Buster Bluth didn’t follow his lead. What’s sad is I think I can find all the MJ references in the video.

Falling Down - Scarlett Johansson

Instead of using this space to talk about boring the song and video is, I would rather talk about the recent news that Scarlett Johansson is engaged to the dude from Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Parlor. Wait, huh? How did this happen? I know I am not up on the high school gossip of rags like US Weekly, but wasn’t she dating the equaling boring dude from 40 Days and 40 Nights?
